Antiques Roadshow expert Ronnie Archer-Morgan was left distressed this week as he refused to value an item brought in by a guest due to its 'disturbing' origin
An expert on Antiques Roadshow just couldn't put a price on an item in a recent episode because of its past. The show, which is fronted by Fiona Bruce, was in Alexandra Gardens in Cardiff on Sunday .
The item brought in turned out to be linked to the slave trade, leaving Ronnie visibly upset. Presenter Fiona said: "The item was a disc that acted as an endorsement of the professional reputation of an African slave trader in the West African port of Bonny in the 18th century." The guest acquired the object while working for a family as she explained: "One of the members passed away and she was having a house sale. And I bought that 36 years ago in the house sale for £3." She admitted it "looked interesting" to her, but confessed she "had no idea what it was."
Late in the conversation, Ronnie dropped a personal bombshell: "My great-grandmother was a returned slave from Nova Scotia in Canada and came back to Sierra Leone and Freetown. And I actually think it's my cultural duty, our cultural duty, to talk about things like this."
