APD's interim chief drafted a letter supporting Daniel Perry 's pardon for the murder of Garrett Foster , arguing it was self-defense, but ultimately did not submit the letter after discussions with city leadership.
Perry was convicted in April, 2023 of murdering Foster during a protest in downtown Austin in July 2020. Last week, Governor Greg Abbott pardoned Perry,with Travis County District Attorney José Garza, who accused Abbott of putting "politics over justice."
