Ambitious islander targets success for Scottish Greens on Arran

Back in the day, punk enthusiast Neil Wilkinson rocked out to hits like Happy House by Siouxsie and the Banshees and was a major fan of the Skids. And the hill-walking, science and history enthusiast aims to hit the heights by becoming the first Scottish Green Party councillor elected to North Ayrshire Council .

Neil moved permanently to the island from Edinburgh in 2011 to become a housing and property officer with Trust Housing Association and lives there with his wife, Ishbel, and two grown-up sons, now in their twenties.“I am so lucky to be living in this wonderful place and will be retiring in November.”

He said: “Initially, I was simply hoping to do better than the Greens had back in 2022. But then incredibly the SNP were not standing and we realised this would be a race between us and the Tories. In 2022 we did better than Labour but not as well as the SNP or the Tories. He feels the Green Islands Plan for Arran and Cumbrae produced by North Ayrshire Council, has just been “sat on” and they need to start taking action to hit the targets revealed within the proposals.“Very definitely there should be a quota reserved on each sailing for Arran residents. We should take Peel Ports into public ownership, with a more democratic form of governance, rooted in Arran and Ardrossan, than traditional nationalisation," he said.
