Arrest after man attacked with machete outside Arndale in Manchester city centre
A man has been arrested after a terrifying brawl in front of dozens of horrified onlookers in Manchester city centre. The incident was captured on video on Wednesday and showed two men fighting before one pulls out a large machete and swings it at the other.
The fight happened around 6.15pm just outside the entrance to the Arndale shopping centre in Exchange Square as people walked by. Police were called to the scene with witnesses telling the Manchester Evening News they saw a number of police vehicles parked up beside the tram stop in Exchange Square and officers circling the Printworks at the time.
Police have now arrested a 49-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after the 'targeted' attack. They remain in police custody for questioning. Detective Constable Daniel Mather of GMP’s City of Manchester Central division, said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank the public for sharing information with us direct following the incident which happened in broad daylight in a busy area of our city earlier this week.
"We want to reassure the public our investigation has led to an arrest in what we believe is a targeted attack. Information and details can still be shared with us direct as our enquiries continue, but we are aware of a video being circulated on social media and would urge the public from sharing this further.
"If you have any information that may help, please call us on 101 quoting 2938 of 19/04/23. You can also use our Live Chat service on the GMP website to do this. For more of today's top stories click here.
