Regime changes in Mali and Burkina Faso have brought in leaders more hostile to Western forces, creating an opportunity for Russia to expand its influence in the continent
“Russia has increasingly made a bilateral push on the continent,” said Christine Caldera, coordinator for the non-governmental organisation Global Centre for Responsibility to Protect.
Burkina Faso last month ordered the eviction of French troops from the country. It came after those forces, along with their British allies, withdrew from neighbouring Mali last year. “Burkina Faso needs security support, it [evicting French troops] does create a vacuum,” said Lauren Hess, a former South African Fulbright scholar and foreign policy analyst.Despite the Burkina Faso government vehemently denying that it has agreed to pay Wagner for security operations with a mining concessions Ms Caldera said it’s likely that the group could come in to the country “in the next couple of months”.
