'Many disabled people, for example, cannot buy their first home because homes aren’t built with disabled people in mind.'

A bold statement, I know, and purposely so.sign of success. It signifies many of the major milestones in our lives: When we fly the nest, learn to drive, get a job, head out on a gap year, go to university, buy our first home, and get married.Becoming ‘independent’ is almost a badge of honour, like the moment your parents or caregiver lets go of you in the pool or removes your stabilisers from your bike. When you take your first steps unaided by the sofa.

Disabled people are less likely to be in employment due to glaring workplace discrimination and travel can become prohibitively costly, with many of us seen as high risk for insurance cover. Last week was a nightmare. My wheelchair broke twice and Covid impacted the support I receive. I couldn’t get proper cover work and had to settle for a few hours of support, rather than the full amount I’m entitled to.

I wouldn’t think twice if a friend called me up and told they needed a hand, but for me, it feels different. We are seen as a drain or a burden. Our needs are often talked about in terms of being ‘extra’ or ‘special’. As though we are the only members of society that need help and support.we aren’t being made to feel guilty, we are being hit heavily in our pockets for this ‘luxury’ – contrary to popular belief, social care is not free.

In fact, the proposed changes to the Care Act may leave many disabled people in poverty, as they will have to pay for care out of their means tested benefits. The argument is that everyone will pay the same for social care but that means that the poorest or young disabled people who want to build up their careers and those who cannot work, will be hit the hardest, as they will be expected to pay the same as those with assets of over £106,000.
