Reports surfaced that Asma al-Assad, wife of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, was planning to divorce and leave Russia for London. However, the UK government stated that existing sanctions, including a travel ban and asset freeze, would prevent her return. Foreign Secretary David Lammy previously confirmed that Asma al-Assad is a sanctioned individual and 'not welcome' in the UK.

“But more broadly you will have seen that we have very tough sanctions in place against the Assad family and the former regime, which remain in place.” The reports were denied by the Kremlin on Monday which, according to Reuters, said it was untrue that Mrs Assad was seeking to leave.Asked on a conference call if the reports corresponded to reality, Peskov said: “No they do not correspond to reality.”
