Members and Mayor Dave Bronson met during a special meeting on Thursday.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - An ordinance put forward by Anchorage Assembly members, aiming to create safe, designated spaces for people experiencing homelessness, passed as amended with a vote of 8-1 Thursday evening. The ordinance was based off an original concept from Mayor Dave Bronson, which Assembly members Felix Rivera, Randy Sulte, and Karen Bronga used to create the ordinance that passed.
“Until we can get enough shelter stood up, the mayor is looking at ways to establish places for unsheltered citizens to safely reside while also keeping our city streets, park and trails safe,” Hoxie wrote, “and keeping downtown safe and vibrant for the tourist season. Part of that plan is establishing places for unsheltered citizens who live in their vehicles to have a place to safely park.”
“Having designated, safe parking areas so people know the rules and where they can go, so they don’t have the fear of their entire life being towed away, and then them not being able to access their belongings after its towed away,” said Assembly Member Felix Rivera. “I think it’s important to provide that grace.”“This just outlines more structure within people who are living in vehicles,” she said, “and outlines where people can and cannot park and habitat their vehicles.
