A majority of MPs in England and Wales have approved a proposal to legalize assisted dying for terminally ill adults with six months left to live. This decision may lead to increased life insurance premiums, stricter underwriting practices, and more policy exclusions.
A proposal to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales was backed by a majority of MPs last week. The decision paves the way for a change in the law that would allow terminally ill adults with six months left to live to request medical assistance to die. Concerns have grown about the potential impact the bill could have on life insurance premiums and the protection industry.
'Ultimately, the impact on the life insurance industry is uncertain, but changes in underwriting, product design and industry practices are almost guaranteed,' he said. His thoughts were echoed by Ben Perks, managing director at Orchard Financial Advisers, who said insurers will not want to pay out in the event of assisted dying. 'This will change the shape of insurance policies going forward,' he added.
