The Aston Martin Heritage Trust (AMHT) has abandoned plans for a physical museum in Newport Pagnell, citing the inability to secure a commercial partner. The town council, which had granted land for the project, expressed disappointment over the decision.
A town council has expressed disappointment and annoyance after learning that plans for an Aston Martin museum have been abandoned. Milton Keynes City Council granted land in Newport Pagnell to the Aston Martin Heritage Trust (AMHT) in 2021. However, AMHT revealed that it had been unable to secure a commercial partner for the project and is now exploring alternative options, such as an online virtual museum.
Newport Pagnell Town Council stated, 'We had anticipated that this development would be a significant boost to our local economy, and we had invested a considerable amount of effort in removing all obstacles to its progress.' The council's initial excitement stemmed from Aston Martin's historical ties to the town. In 1954, industrialist Sir David Brown, upon acquiring Aston Martin, recognized the limitations of the existing factory in Feltham, Middlesex. He relocated production to Newport Pagnell, where iconic models such as the DB4, DB5, and DB6 were manufactured for over half a century until 2007, at which point production shifted to Gaydon, Warwickshire. Aston Martin Works, responsible for sales, repairs, and restorations, continues to operate in the Buckinghamshire town.In a December email to Newport Town Council, AMHT expressed gratitude for the offered site and patience during their investigation into the museum's financial viability. While acknowledging that online platforms, podcasts, and traveling exhibitions would still incur substantial costs, AMHT stated that they represent 'a more achievable goal than raising tens of millions of pounds for a new facility.' The council is now revisiting its plans for the former allotment land, acknowledging that 'it is most likely to be repurposed for some form of sporting or leisure use.
