NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, initially planned for an eight-day stay on the International Space Station (ISS), are facing a prolonged mission due to the delayed rescue operation.
Two NASA astronauts, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, have been stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) since June, facing another delay in their rescue mission . Originally scheduled for an eight-day stay, the veteran astronauts arrived on the ISS aboard Boeing's Starliner capsule. Due to initial technical issues, their return was postponed to February.
However, the latest update reveals they will remain on the ISS until at least March, marking a ten-month stay far longer than anticipated. With the Starliner capsule returning empty to Earth in September, Williams and Wilmore are dependent on SpaceX for their rescue. This delay grants SpaceX additional time to prepare its newly developed capsule for launch. Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, emphasizes the meticulous nature of spacecraft construction and testing. Williams and Wilmore's mission began on June 5th from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, aiming to test the Starliner capsule. The plan involved a launch, several test maneuvers, docking with the ISS for eight days, and a return to Earth in the same capsule. However, the Starliner encountered multiple problems, including thruster failures and helium leaks, which hampered its performance
