The Spirit of Discovery became stranded in he waters off France’s west coast Around 100 holidaymakers have been injured after a cruise ship was battered by gale force winds and 30ft waves. Passengers on the ‘Spirit of Discovery’ boat faced a harrowing ordeal last week when they were forced to cut a trip to the Canary Islands short following reports of a horrific storm.
Passengers were then left stranded on the open sea for a further 18 hours as the ship waited for the storm to pass. The Spirit of Discovery arrived back at Portsmouth on Monday evening but Saga Cruises has not confirmed if any of those injured require further treatment ashore. Saga Cruises CEO Nigel Blanks wrote to passengers acknowledging the ‘extremely frightening time’ while emphasising that the ship remained ‘safe.
