'Forget the surface of a road, it's more like the surface of the moon'
Motorists are being forced to swerve onto the other side of the road to avoid huge potholes on the gateway into Preston .
Ian Ainsworth, who drives in and out of Preston for work every day, said he has been forced to "crawl along at a ridiculously slow speed" in order to ensure his wheels aren't damaged by the potholes. Potholes typically become more prominent in the first few months of the year when a period of frost and ice is followed by warmer temperatures and heavy rainfall. Lancashire County Council, which is responsible for highways across most of the county, has had to appoint external contractors to assist with the backlog of defects in need of repair.
"We have engaged extra contractors to add to the resources available to our highways teams, and they're working hard to make any repairs needed.
