Leanne bravely shares the devastating impact of the stabbing attack that left her physically and mentally scarred, highlighting the lasting trauma she and the surviving victims endure.
Leanne miraculously saved two children during a horrific stabbing attack but was left in a life-threatening condition herself. During Rudakubana 's sentencing hearing, Leanne bravely addressed the three innocent victims, stating, 'For Alice, Elsie, Bebe, Heidi, and the surviving girls, I'm surviving for you.' She poignantly shared how the attack shattered her sense of security, leaving her unable to be alone, work, or even walk down the street without fear.
'As a 36-year-old woman,' she confessed, 'I cannot give myself compassion or accept praise, as how can I live knowing I survived when children died?' Leanne's testimony revealed the profound impact the trauma has had on her life. She struggles to see the goodness in the world, knowing the 'badness has been evidentially proven to me to exist, in plain sight, on our doorsteps, in our community.' The attack fundamentally altered her mindset, robbing her of the ability to accept people as they are and leaving her with a crippling sense of responsibility for others' safety. She lamented, 'Just when I felt I could settle and try to move forward, the trauma of that day is now back at the forefront. I constantly see his face; new memories have appeared, and this will continue to happen for the rest of my life.' The physical and mental scars of the attack remain a constant reminder of Rudakubana's brutality. Leanne described the 'visual daily reminders' that serve as painful testaments to what he did. 'The trauma of being both a victim and a witness has been horrendous,' she said, highlighting the devastating emotional toll on herself and those close to her. She concluded her statement by poignantly stating, 'He targeted us because we were women and girls, vulnerable and easy prey.' Rudakubana is due to be sentenced today after pleading guilty to three counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder. Adding further anguish to the victims' families, he staged courtroom disruptions, shouting that he was 'ill' and requiring a paramedic shortly after the sentencing began, in another display of his callous disregard for the pain he has caused
