7NEWS: Perth man Steve Kezic speared through nose by garfish while surfing in Indonesia
thought one of his fellow surfers had thrown seaweed at him after feeling a slap on his face while sitting on his board.A 30cm garfish — which are also known as sea needles — had launched out of the water and cut through his skin, leaving a pointy beak sticking out of his nose.His fellow surfers rushed Kezic onto a speedboat and back to shore, as blood poured from his face.
He admitted concern about not knowing where the nearest hospital was, but in a fortunate turn of events, an emergency doctor from the WA city of Busselton was also in the water and performed impromptu surgery back on dry land.Kezic required surgery on the beach to remove the fish beak which had pierced his nose.“The procedure took around an hour. I ended up with three stitches altogether,” he told PerthNow.“Three days have passed and I haven’t faced any infection from it.
