Australia’s best swimmers are competing for Olympic selection tonight at Brisbane Aquatic Centre. Follow all the action:
American Olympic champion Rowdy Gaines has hailed the unprecedented strength of Australia’s swimming team ahead of the Paris Olympics, believing the Dolphins are poised to top the medal table over their fierce USA rivals for the first time in 68 years.
Australia stunned the USA at last year’s world swimming championships in Japan by topping the medal table with 13 gold medals, seven silvers and five bronzes. The USA managed just seven gold medals, which was their lowest world championship haul since the four they won in 1994. They did win a whopping 20 silver medals in Fukuoka but were consistently pipped by the likes of Ariarne Titmus, Kaylee McKeown, Cam McEvoy, Kyle Chalmers and Australia’s relay teams.The Dolphins won more gold medals at the last Olympics in Tokyo than ever before., which airs on Sunday night, Gaines has conceded Team USA will have their work cut out in Paris.
The Olympics are so close, but first, our Aussie athletes have to book their spot on the plane to Paris. There are a number of Aussie superstars in the pool tonight at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, including Ariarne Titmus and Kaylee McKeown. We’ve had heats throughout the day, tonight, it’s all about clearing the final hurdle.Races are from 7:30pm AEST, starting with the women’s 400m freestyle final.
