Using the air circulation button in cold weather can trap humidity, leading to misted windscreens. Car servicing experts advise switching it off for safer driving.
Motorists have been issued a warning about not using one specific button while trying to clear frosty windscreens as the UK faces wintry conditions. The air circulation button, typically illustrated with an icon of a car with an arrow circling inside it, is used to control the flow of air within the vehicle. This function is especially useful in summer for effectively cooling the interior and keeping out pollution, exhaust gases, pollen, and bad smells.
However, one car servicing and tyre specialist advises against using this feature during winter. Eden Tyres suggested: 'As a general rule, when it's cold outside, make sure the recirculation button is switched off.' They added: 'The air-recirculation button is best to use alongside your AC during warm weather. During cooler weather it doesn't have many benefits and can even be detrimental.' They explained that some motorists may believe it logical to prevent 'all that cold air coming in' while heating their car in the colder months. Nevertheless, it's advised to keep the air recirculation turned off, reports the Express. According to the Derbyshire-based firm: 'The main downside of the air-recirculation button is that it traps humidity inside the car, which results in misted windscreens, especially when the air is cold outside and in wet weather.' They cautioned that having a full vehicle of passengers could also lead to a stuffy atmosphere, potentially causing drowsiness. Essential advice has been issued as numerous areas of the UK are expected to experience snow and icy conditions, with the Met Office issuing yellow alerts nationwide. Overnight snowfall in Northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and South West England, coupled with sub-zero temperatures, has resulted in icy conditions across the UK this morning
