Kirsty Maclean thought she was run-down from working and going to college.

A courageous patient who suffered a stroke following a series of agonising headaches has thanked NHS Ayrshire & Arran staff for their support as her life has turned around in 18 months.

Last March, as a healthy 22-year-old she had an unexpected stroke and underwent a number of surgeries and intensive rehabilitation. The young woman was admitted to NHS Ayrshire & Arran for emergency and High Dependency Care, before being transferred to Glasgow for neurosurgery. As a result, pressure builds up in the blood vessels and this can lead to swelling and bleeding in the brain. Kirsty wished to share her story to let people know that there can be a successful outcome following a stroke with support in place.

“Two nights before I had the stroke I woke up with a pounding headache worse than ever before but after paracetamol and ibuprofen I managed to sleep. I had breakfast before lying down but painkillers were not working. I called my mum at work. She knew something was wrong, I started being sick, I was in agony.

“After two weeks without improvement I was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I was there for two weeks and had an operation to have a shunt put in to get fluid in to drain my eyes. It didn’t improve my vision but made sure my eyes didn’t get worse.
