A waterlogged lawn can damage your turf, encourage algae and lead to fungal problems, but there are some handy tricks that can help transform your boggy backyard
Green-thumbed enthusiasts are tackling the common issue of waterlogged lawns, which can wreak havoc on your garden's turf and lead to algae and fungal problems - and after Manchester's rainy start to the week, this hack could save your garden. The Royal Horticultural Society explains that compacted soil is often the culprit, resulting from construction activities or regular foot traffic.
However, gardening experts have come forward with their best advice for enhancing drainage and revitalising soil.A member of the Gardening on a budget Facebook group sought advice, posting: "What can I do to fix my garden that holds water and becomes like a paddling pool? " In response, another user shared their successful strategy for dealing with a boggy new build garden.
This was supported by self-proclaimed amateur gardener Tom Smart, who shared with The Guardian his experience of removing a large conifer tree from his waterlogged lawn, which resulted in "one large pond". He explained: "It was then I realised that taking this tree out had exacerbated the situation. A large, mature tree can absorb hundreds of litres of water a day. The tree acted like a pump, helping to improve the drainage", reports the Mirror.
