The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) issued the warning over products containing banned additives in the UK due to links to hyperactivity, behavioral issues – and even cancer. Local authorities, including Salford Trading Standards , are actively confiscating these illegal products from shops to protect consumers.
The products, which have flooded the UK market, contain dangerous ingredients such as brominated vegetable oil (BVO), mineral oil, and Erythrosine (E127) – a coloring banned in the UK due to its links to cancer. Additionally, some products also include additives known to cause hyperactivity in children, including Sunset Yellow (E110), Quinoline Yellow (E104), and Tartrazine (E102).Trading standards have listed some examples of imported food and drinks that have been found to contain banned additives and ingredients. Some of these brands have products intended for the UK market and comply with legislation. Check the ingredients to make sure the product you’re buying doesn’t contain any of the additives listed below. Many of these products contain ingredients that are banned in the UK due to serious health risks. Some of the dangerous additives found in these sweets and drinks include: brominated vegetable oil (BVO), mineral oil, Erythrosine (E127), Sunset Yellow (E110), Quinoline Yellow (E104), and Tartrazine (E102). Additionally, certain additives found in food but banned in drinks, such as Calcium Disodium EDTA (E385), have been shown in animal studies to cause reproductive issues, developmental problems, and colon cancer. Consumers could also experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches, dizziness, and nutrient deficiencies due to the toxic effects of these ingredients.Trading Standards urge consumers to carefully check ingredient lists before purchasing imported sweets and fizzy drinks to ensure they do not contain banned additives. And do not consume any products containing BVO, E127, mineral oil, or other harmful ingredients. Local Trading Standards teams are actively removing these products from stores and educating retailers about the dangers. Consumers shouldn't consume if they spot a product containing a banned ingredient. Instead, report it to Trading Standards by emailing .
