The number of people smoking in a town may have more than halved in a year, according to official estimates. suggest fewer than 10% of people in Barrow, Cumbria, smoked in 2023 compared with 21% in the previous 12 months.
However Colin Cox, formerly director of public health for the whole of Cumbria, called the overall downward trend "excellent news".Cleaner Caroline Hartle, from Barrow, said she began smoking when she was 14 due to "peer pressure" and she would have about 20 cigarettes each day. "It was amazing and changed my life," she said, "and now my sister and my best friend have stopped as well.
