The BBC is shifting to a more digital-first approach but the move has provoked criticism
BBC Radio Nottingham has lost 35% of its listeners since 2021 according to new data. It's one of eight station across the BBC's service to have lost more than a quarter of its listeners in the past two years.
The BBC argued that falling figures are the reason behind their decision to make changes. Nationally, BBC local radio reached only 7.3 million people in June, July and August 2023, compared to 9.2 million in the same period in 2021.But this may be reflective of the public boycotting stations since the announcements, which angered many, with some long-standing presenters, some of whom expressed frustration at the news, quitting their roles and thus driving loyal listeners to follow them away.
It also said that the government expects Ofcom to "ensure the BBC is robustly held to account in delivering its public service duties," noting that the BBC is operationally independent of the Government. It said that the government has already been clear that the BBC "must make sure it continues to provide distinctive and genuinely local content that reflects and represents people and communities from all corners of the UK.
