National Lottery funding allowing Second World War veterans, their carers and families to return to battlefields
A trip back to the scene of a Second World War battle “transformed” an elderly former soldier’s life, his family has said.
His son Ken and daughter Brenda McMeekin said he never spoke about his war-time experiences for most of his life. But at the age of 87 he returned to the town of Cassino as part of The National Lottery’s Heroes Return Programme. “Dad got up and spoke to them, which was a big surprise for us as he was never the type to do this,” she said.
“I asked him one day if he had killed anyone in the war, but he simply replied, ‘I don’t want to talk about it’ and he closed the subject down. When we were in Cassino, he turned to me and said, ‘Let me go now Brenda’.”
