The council faced criticism over a commemoration for victims of the bombings as it did not use the term 'Bloody Friday' on its printed programme

Belfast City Council was advised not to use the term "Bloody Friday" to describe the 50th anniversary of the IRA bombings.

Emails obtained through a Freedom of Information request show the council liaised with CVS to help locate and notify affected families of the planned commemoration. The official wrote: "I'd actually use the term 'Bloody Friday' as little as possible in communication to individuals . DUP MLA Brian Kingston, whose party proposed the commemoration, has written to CVS seeking clarity on what advice was provided.
