Police say officers remain in the Empire Street area of south Belfast as a security alert continues.
Police and Army Technical Officers attended the scene of a security alert on Empire Street, south Belfast, on Wednesday
They said residents who were evacuated from their homes on Wednesday have since been allowed to return after "a suspicious object, believed to be an improvised grenade, was made safe and removed" by Army members. Ch Insp Mark Conway said the investigation is at an early stage but said police are aware of "inaccurate online speculation regarding this alert" and "advised the public not rely on such sources for their information".
