Two Belfast recycling centres will be closed for essential repairs in early 2025. The closures, scheduled in phases, will allow for maintenance to address concrete degradation and safety concerns.
Two of Belfast 's four recycling centers will be temporarily closed for essential repairs during February and March 2025. Belfast City Council announced that the Household Waste Recycling Centres at Ormeau Park Road and Palmerston Road in East Belfast will undergo necessary maintenance. The closures will be staggered to ensure residents have alternative options for waste disposal.
The Ormeau Park Road center will be closed from February 16 to March 9, followed by the Palmerston Road center, which will be closed from March 9 to March 31. A report presented to the council's People and Communities Committee highlights the need for these repairs. It states that a series of repair works have been carried out at the Household Waste Recycling Centres over the years to maintain the integrity of the service bays. The most recent works involved installing steel plates in the concrete floor of the bay at Alexandra HWRC in October 2024. The report emphasizes that the concrete degradation within the service bays at Park Road and Palmerston Road poses increasing safety concerns for both staff and contractors using equipment. Without addressing this issue, further degradation could lead to the cessation of operations and site closure. The council acknowledges the potential inconvenience caused by these closures and will communicate any updates through their social media platforms. Signage will be placed at each site to direct residents to alternative facilities across the city during the repair period. Councillor Hedley Abernethy, representing the Alliance Party, raised concerns about the potential for residents to be unaware of the closures despite publicity efforts. He also suggested exploring the feasibility of pedestrian access to the recycling centers, particularly at Palmerston Road, while the sites are undergoing renovations. The council responded that proposals for improving pedestrian access at Palmerston and Blackstaff are in development, with Palmerston being prioritized. Funding for these projects will be sought once quotations are obtained
