Diggle, Oldham Being by the water can have a calming effect, and it looks especially magical if its frozen over. Greater Manchester has no shortage of canalside walks, and one which offers glorious views across the countryside is in Diggle in Oldham. Here you can follow the Huddersfield Narrow Canal north from Uppermill to Diggle. It’s a gorgeous stretch of canal crossed by pretty bridges and it has incredible views of Saddleworth Moor - it’s especially beautiful when there’s been a heavy frost or recent snowfall. Reddish Vale Country Park Boasting 161 hectares of parkland, Reddish Vale Country Park feels like a pocket of countryside within the M60. The park is dominated by an impressive, 16-arch viaduct which was built in 1875 to carry the Hope Valley Line over the Tame Valley and you may even spot a train passing over during your visit. The park has an industrial past as it was originally home to a calico print works which closed in 1975 and was later demolished, but today it’s a haven for wildlife with grassy meadows, ponds and wooded areas.
