US President revealed flashes of anger towards Trump and defended his record in an emotional speech
Joe Biden gave an impassioned speech summing up his legacy as well as his fears over a Trump presidency would show up on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention.
But the speech he gave, and the way he delivered it, suggested that no matter what else he may felt, he wanted to be remembered by his country and the world, as someone who had done the right thing by choice and not by force. “America,” he said. “I gave my best to you.” When he first appeared on stage, escorted by Ashley Biden, his youngest child, Biden also appeared weighted with emotion, sometimes blinking at his eyes, as if struggling to hold back tears.
“He brought dignity, decency, and competence back to the White House and he showed what it means to be a true patriot,” said Clinton, who herself received huge applause. Polls have put Democrats equal or ahead of the Republicans, not only in the national vote but in the half-dozen battleground states that will likely decide the election.
It was more like pugnacious State of the Union speech earlier this year and nothing like the debate in June in which Biden had appeared in a daze.
