The plans will link Rushcliffe to the centre of Nottingham
Progress is being made on plans for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Trent to create links between Rushcliffe and the centre of Nottingham. Plans were first unveiled in 2021 for the bridge, which will be located in the Trent Basin on the banks of the river.
Nottingham City Council is now due to ask for the Government's permission for the building of the bridge, one of the final steps needed before construction starts. A "significant milestone" was announced earlier this year when Pick Everard was announced as the company that will deliver the bridge project alongside Balfour Beatty.
But given that the River Trent is subject to public rights of navigation, Nottingham City Council has no automatic authority to build a bridge over the river and the Government must first give the green light. Once planning permission for the project has been secured, the Government will then confirm the scheme in a process that should take around 10 weeks.
Describing its own next steps on the bridge project, Nottingham City Council says: "The detailed design stage will involve Balfour Beatty preparing detailed architectural and engineering drawings and finalising a detailed cost plan for the construction phase. During this period, the council will focus on finalising assembling the land required to build the scheme [and] securing planning permission.
Calls are still being made for a fourth road crossing to be built over the River Trent, with a Government minister saying last year that they would look into the business case for it. Nottinghamshire's highways chief said at the time that the demand for such a project was "definitely there."
