Bingham, Nottinghamshire is defying the trend of empty high streets with a vibrant food and drink scene. The town, once named the best place to raise a family, is now a hotspot for everything from breakfast to fine dining.

It's rare to find a town across Nottinghamshire that doesn't have a generic soulless high street at best, or multiple empty properties at worst. But there's one area that seems to be bucking the trend. Bingham is alive and well with entrepreneurial spirit, especially on the food and drink scene, which is going from strength to strength. Aside from Costa Coffee and Greggs, most of the cafes, restaurants and bars are locally owned.

A decade ago the town was named the best place in England and Wales to bring up a family, topping a study looking at the quality of schools, childcare provision, affordability of living and crime levels. Now, as we enter 2025, it's becoming a prime spot for everything from breakfast through to a three-course dinner with cocktails and local beers. Having hidden its light under a bushel for so long, we turn the spotlight on the town and the businesses setting it alight. Mostly all centred around the Market Place, there's hardly any distance between them, making competition rife, but the owners relish it. Number Sixteen 'I feel very privileged to have a business in a town like this. We are so so lucky. I absolutely love Bingham,' said Chris Lees, the flamboyant and exuberant host at Number Sixteen, a cafe, bar and bistro that opened six years ago. The 44-seater venue, overlooking the Market Place, is a stylish spot for breakfast and lunch seven days a week. Everything is made fresh from scratch. Customers can start the day with bubble and squeak with a poached egg and bacon, eggs royale or American pancakes, while the best-selling full English is on sale throughout the day. Over lunchtime the menu switches to include burgers, a posh prawn cocktail, club sandwiches and salads. The venue takes on more of a restaurant-style atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when it stays open later with a menu of tapas, sharing platters, steak and burgers - and cocktails.
