Bird flu outbreak at Loch Birnie and Gaddon in Fife, Scotland, leading to swan deaths. Public urged not to feed birds to prevent further spread.
Several swans have died at Loch Birnie and Gaddon in Fife , Scotland , from bird flu . The Fife Coast and Countryside Trust reported the deaths on January 7 and urged the public not to feed the birds to prevent further spread of the disease. Bird flu spreads through direct or indirect contact with infected saliva, nasal secretions, or droppings, as well as through predation/scavenging. Feeding birds encourages them to congregate, increasing the risk of transmission.
The trust also asked locals to keep dogs on leads. This outbreak follows a recent incident in Alloa where around 20 headless birds were found on an industrial estate, with the cause of death still unknown. The government is testing the dead birds for bird flu, but results may take up to two weeks
