Policies that fly in the face of the King's eco credentials must have been deeply uncomfortable for him to read out. There was also some booing on the procession route - something it appears he'll have to get used to.

This was probably the most important event of his reign so far - and it was certainly the most scrutinised. A King's Speech in parliament brought a scene not witnessed for seven decades. As Prince of Wales he's been several times before, but never as monarch. His responsibility now, simply to read his government's words. Many had wondered how a King with long-standing eco credentials would cope delivering political policy that's been condemned by green campaigners.

What started small is growing in number and around 100 protesters gathered on the procession route. They would never have booed the late Queen, but a new reign has renewed their resolve. The protests are noisy and impossible to ignore. But there's little the King can do to stop them. For republicans he represents a constitution that is outdated and unfair.
