Boris-regret is yet to really take hold of the Tory party
One question is whether Boris Johnson can steal the thunder from the Tory leadership hopefuls Conservative party conferences tends to offer a good litmus test as to Tory thinking. One year later, she’d made it happen.fringe in Birmingham this week were asked whether they would welcome the return of Johnson to Parliament, the response was rather cool.
Despite the colourful excerpts, Johnson is already being accused by some colleagues of pulling his punches. While the book is reflective of his trademark bombastic style, it’s not too heavy on soul searching. While his feelings of betrayal at the hands of various colleagues – from Rishi Sunak to Michael Gove – are touched on, there is less about what he perhaps should have done differently.
So, is Johnson of the view that it could be time to return from his own country retreat to SW1? Johnson was always planning to write the book – and it’s worth pointing out that a large part of the motivation is likely to be a financial one. The book deal along with the sought after serialisation are likely to have been lucrative for the former Prime Minister, who was known to struggle with finances when in 10 Downing Street.
As Johnson starts to embark on a publicity blitz in the coming days, he will be able to show whether he still can steal the thunder from Tories and generate the most column inches. “He definitely wants to return,” says one former minister. “Right now there’s not a vacancy but that could change.” Others say that Johnson plans to speak more – partly out of care for the future of the Tory party and the country now Labour is in government.
