The Balearic Islands have introduced a ban on drinking alcohol in public at night in a bid to curb mass tourism - with the new rule expected to come into force immediately
A crackdown on boozing has been announced in two of the UK's most beloved holiday destinations - with a complete ban from 9.30pm to come into force.
This will impact popular locations including Llucmajor, Palma, Calvia , and Sant Antoni in Ibiza, which are all magnets for high tourism traffic. Officials from the Balearic Islands have confirmed this stringent prohibition is set to remain effective until at least December 31, 2027.In addition, they have "commercial establishments" will be required to shut down during the hours specified by the new rule.
Jaime Martinez, the mayor of Palma, Mallorca's capital, stated that these laws would aid in "correcting uncivil attitudes" often exhibited by tourists in the city. He warned that rule-breakers could be hit with fines up to £2,600, with more regulations set to be unveiled in the upcoming months.
