Britain's social drinking culture, often referred to as 'wine o'clock,' is partly to blame for a steep rise in deaths from chronic liver disease, according to new research. The trend has increased fivefold since the 1970s, and it doesn't take much alcohol to trigger liver damage.
Britain's ' wine o'clock ' culture may be partly responsible for an alarming trend of a fivefold increase in liver disease deaths since the 1970s. Liver cirrhosis, strokes, and cancer are well-known risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, but recent research indicates that it doesn't take much alcohol to trigger liver damage. BBC Panorama journalist Hazel Martin was shocked to find out she had alcohol-related liver fibrosis at the age of 31.
Despite drinking socially and never alone, her consumption from her late teens to late 20s was considered binge drinking. Experts have also observed a concerning rise in alcohol-related deaths among middle-aged women. A study on mice found that just 21 binge drinking sessions over seven weeks could cause symptoms of early-stage liver failure. Binge drinking was defined as five beers, a bottle of wine, or five shots of hard liquor for men, and four or more drinks in two hours for women
