A British citizen, who was on a cycling tour in Finland, is accused of murdering a 75-year-old man. He admits to the attack, but claims self-defense after being allegedly raped by the pensioner. Prosecutors are seeking a 10-year prison sentence.
A 32-year-old British man is facing a potential 10-year prison sentence in Finland for allegedly murdering a 75-year-old man. The British national, who was on a cycling tour, admitted to attacking the pensioner multiple times with an axe inside his home in Seinajoki, western Finland. The incident occurred on July 28, after the pair met at a local spa. CCTV footage captured them purchasing a mobile phone and arriving at the pensioner's residence.
The British man reportedly assisted with some gardening at the flat. According to the defendant, the pensioner tied him up and raped him. He claimed that after the assault, he managed to escape and, fearing for his life, attacked the older man with an axe in self-defense. However, prosecutors allege that the pensioner died from six axe wounds struck while he slept. The British man then fled the scene in the victim's car, which he later abandoned after colliding with a deer. He sent messages to a friend expressing his fear of being caught by the police. The pensioner's body was discovered two weeks later, on August 14, after relatives requested a welfare check. Police identified the British man as the prime suspect and tracked him down to a flat in eastern Finland. An axe found in the Seinajoki flat contained only the pensioner's DNA. The British man claims to have been traveling around Europe to raise funds for British charities and planned to work at a friend's husky farm in Finland. His internet history revealed searches for online crime reports weeks before the pensioner's body was found. The pensioner's daughter disputed the allegations against her father, citing his deteriorating health. The trial will continue following the results of mental health examinations requested by law officials. Prosecutors are seeking a 10-year prison sentence if the British man is found guilty of murder
