Furious British MPs accuse Trump of appeasing Russia during call with Putin, urging government to be prepared for war. MPs warn that any peace deal allowing Russia to retain annexed territories could lead to further aggression.
British Members of Parliament (MPs) today expressed fury over Donald Trump 's perceived appeasement of Russia , issuing stark warnings that Britain must be prepared for war. The alarm was sounded following a bombshell phone call between Mr. Trump and Russia n President Vladimir Putin , which both described as 'lengthy and highly productive'. During the conversation, they agreed to immediately initiate talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.
However, any potential peace agreement is anticipated to allow Russia to retain the territories it has annexed since 2014, including the Crimean peninsula. This outcome represents a significant setback for Kyiv after three years of fighting for its freedom.Furthermore, the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO, a stated policy of the alliance, appears to have been effectively ruled out. Adding to the concerns, Mr. Trump is urging European NATO members to commit to allocating 5 percent of their GDP to defense, a target that the United States itself does not currently meet. The UK, a major defense spender, has yet to establish a timetable to reach the 2.5 percent threshold. Outside of Parliament, Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, highlighted the 'huge sacrifices' made by Ukrainians in the war. He emphasized, 'Nobody wants the conflict to continue... but we must make sure Ukraine is at the heart of it.'At a NATO meeting in Brussels, Defence Secretary John Healey sought to downplay differences while stressing that 'there can be no negotiation about Ukraine without Ukraine.' However, MPs in Parliament delivered a more direct and critical message. Tory MP Sir Julian Lewis urged the government to swiftly push defense spending towards 5 percent of GDP, warning that 'appeasement led to World War Two.' He implored the government to remind Mr. Trump that the 'reason why appeasement led to World War Two was that it left a vacuum in Europe.' Conversely, Lewis argued, 'the reason why the occupation of Eastern Europe at the end of that war did not lead to World War Three was the United States filled any possible vacuum and contained further aggression.' Fellow Conservative Sir Bernard Jenkin echoed the sentiment, stating, 'Some of the defence chiefs have been expressing this, that we must be ready to fight a war with Russia if necessary, in order to be able to deter Russia, and if we are to be in any position to guarantee the security of an independent and sovereign Ukraine, after whatever is agreed between President Trump and President Putin.
