“It’s a daily debate,” says Douglas James Cartner. “Mentally I still feel like I’m sitting in a trench. A part of me wants to go back.” The 26-year-old returned to the UK last month after seven months in Ukraine
around the eastern region of Kharkiv, eventually helping to reclaim the cities of Lyman and Izyum.
“Kids and grandmothers slowly moving back was the greatest reward to me, just watching kids eating ice cream and playing with their siblings. “It’s the guys you’re with that makes it a lot more tolerable,” he says. “The guys I was with were basically family. That’s what kept me going.” Nothing at home can match that thrill, or the sense of meaning that came with fighting for Ukraine’s independence – a cause that Mr Chadwick came to closely identify with.
