Gillian Anderson’s book is a genuinely fascinating insight into the female sexual psyche
was responsible for the sexual awakening of every Gen X man I’ve ever met, and given my propensity to date older men, that’s a lot of people. But now she’s moved on from teaching teenage boys how to dream, and spearheaded aDiscussing the project, Anderson explained that the purpose of the book is not only to explore women’s sexual fantasies but to “equate living one’s life on one’s own terms, and the desire for that”.
There’s so much longing in these essays, and such a sense of resignation that these fantasies, many of which are perfectly achievable if you have a sexual partner, are just that. Fantasy. Women seem totally willing to accept that they can long for something privately but that it’s never going to actually happen.with their partners, or have underwhelming perfunctory sex with the men they love. Those who have a lot of sex often do it out of a sense of obligation.
There are plenty of women who have pet fantasies which are designed to remain that way. Non-consent is perfectly viable within our own private imaginations and horrific in real life. Bringingis a delicious concept in fantasy but a complicated one to pull off successfully in the real world. But there are so many fantasies in Anderson’s book which should be completely manageable, and which these women seem to have resigned themselves to never experiencing.
