The new tax will hit vapers harder than first thought but there is some respite
Vape users are set to cough up more cash for their e-liquids following Chancellor Rachel Reeves's announcement of a new tax in the Budget. In an unexpected turn, Reeves has scrapped the graduated approach based on nicotine content and introduced a 'flat-rate duty' of £2.20 per 10ml across all strengths, set to take effect from October 1, 2026. This move marks a significant jump in cost for those using nicotine-free liquids, but it’s a reduction for users of stronger products.
Ms Reeves highlighted a forthcoming charge, announcing 'an additional one-off increase' of £2.20 per pack of 20 cigarettes or 50g of rolling tobacco alongside the incoming flat-rate duty on all vaping liquids slated for next year 'to maintain the incentive to give up smoking'. Meanwhile, the new Labour administration has pledged to pursue the preceding Conservative government’s efforts to curb the surge in vaping among youth, reports the Mirror .
