Carole says it is possible to manage on the state pension alone, but that there is no space for luxuries and the rising cost of living has made social events more difficult

People with limited savings like Carole should receive extra support beyond the state pension through other benefits and allowances For most British people, the state pension will form the bulk of their retirement income – or at least contribute to a good part of it. Theis currently £10,600 a year and The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association says this is not enough for a comfortable retirement.

Carole retired around 14 years ago, after a career working in offices and teaching private electronic keyboard and organ lessons at her home. She enjoys walking, reading, listening to music and free audiobook downloads. Carole pays her own electricity bill, which is around £34 a month. She uses as little electricity as possible by switching to an air fryer to reduce her oven use and boiling only enough water for immediate use when she uses the kettle. She used to be a member of the Rock Choir, a national organisation with local hubs where people sing, perform in local gigs and can take part in national events.

Since Carole only has the state pension as her income, she is entitled to extra benefits such as the winter fuel allowance and the cost of living payments. Her council tax and rent of £87 a week are covered by housing benefit. The water bill and energy costs come out of her pension.
