The UK Health Security Agency has warned that norovirus is spreading earlier and more severely than usual, with cases having surged by 29% in the space of two weeks

Brits are being alerted to a severe illness that is striking earlier and affecting more people than usual this autumn. The highly contagious norovirus, typically seen in the winter months, has arrived early this year, according to experts.

Sufferers also commonly experience headaches, limb aches and pains, and a high temperature. These symptoms can appear suddenly one or two days after exposure to the virus. To steer clear of the dreaded norovirus, pay attention to frequently touched areas and be rigorous with handwashing. Douglas gives clear instructions for those affected: Keep to yourself and limit interactions. "Do not return to work, school or nursery until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped, and don't prepare food for others in that time either. If you are unwell, avoid visiting people in hospitals and care homes to prevent passing on the infection in these settings."
