Cllr Jenney passed away on Boxing Day last year

The Conservatives have comfortably held a seat in a by-election caused by an experienced councillor’s death in December. David Jenney, who sat on North Northamptonshire Council , served as the deputy leader of the former East Northamptonshire Council.

He had been elected to North Northamptonshire Council on May 6, 2021, as a Conservative councillor. Councillor Jenney had also been a member of Rushden Town Council since 2007 and served as Town Mayor for Rushden in 2013/2014. Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council, said in December: "This is very sad news indeed and our thoughts are with David’s widow Barbara and all of their family and friends at this very difficult time. David was a well-respected member of the authority and brought a tremendous amount of experience and wisdom to his role."His death will be a huge loss to his family, friends and colleagues at NNC and in the community. He will be sorely missed.

Melanie Coleman held the Rushden South ward for the Conservatives. She won 1,210 votes. Chris Ashton, the Labour Party's candidate, won 638 votes and finished in second place. The other two seats in the Rushden South ward were already held by Conservative councillors Steven North and Andy Mercer after they won them with Mr Jenney in 2021.READ NEXT:
