At least eight Cabinet ministers are likely to vote against the assisted dying bill at its first Commons hurdle
On Friday MPs will vote on a private members bill being brought by Kim Leadbeater which could pave the way to assisted dying becoming legal as early as the end of next year.
MPs will have a free vote, meaning they can vote based on their conscience rather than along party lines. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson have also said they will vote against the legislation. However, the majority of the Cabinet is believed to support the proposed law. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, Science Secretary Peter Kyle, and Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn are all expected to vote in favour.
