Cain International , a real estate investment company co-founded by American Todd Boehly and British businessman Jonathan Goldstein , has agreed to purchase a 49% stake in the Trent Rockets , valuing the entire Hundred franchise at £79 million. Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, which hosts the Rockets at their Trent Bridge ground, will retain the remaining 51% ownership. The deal, worth just under £40 million, brings the total investment in Hundred franchises to over £500 million.
This acquisition follows a trend of increasing investment in cricket's fastest-growing format. Southern Brave, the eighth and final franchise, is expected to be sold later this week, likely to the co-owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Delhi Capitals, who recently acquired Hampshire County Cricket Club. Boehly, a prominent figure in the sports world, is known for his involvement in various ventures. He led a consortium that purchased Premier League club Chelsea for £4.25 billion in 2022 and currently serves as chairman at Stamford Bridge. Goldstein, also a member of Chelsea's board, joins Boehly in expanding their portfolio within the sports industry. Through Eldridge Industries, their conglomerate, Boehly holds minority ownership in the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and has stakes in numerous other sports-related businesses. Nottinghamshire becomes the fifth county to sell a 49% share in their Hundred franchise. Other prominent deals include Surrey's £60 million agreement with the owners of Mumbai Indians for a 49% stake in Oval Invincibles, Warwickshire's £40 million sale of Birmingham Phoenix to Knighthead Capital, and Glamorgan's £40 million deal with IT entrepreneur Sanjay Govil for a 49% stake in Welsh Fire. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) also sold a 49% share of London Spirit to a consortium led by Nikesh Arora. Lancashire became the first county to sell a significant portion of their share, agreeing to a deal for 70% of Manchester Originals with the owners of Lucknow Super Giants for approximately £81 million. Yorkshire took the lead by selling their entire stake to the Sun Group, owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad, for over £100 million. Revenue generated from these sales will primarily benefit the 18 first-class counties, the MCC, and the recreational game of cricket
