Three cats in San Bernardino, California, died after consuming raw milk contaminated with the H5N1 bird flu virus. The owner, Joseph Journell, is seeking compensation from the raw milk supplier while the supplier disputes the link between the milk and the cats' deaths.
Joseph Journell, a 56-year-old resident of San Bernardino, lost three of his cats to bird flu in late November. Journell had been feeding his cats Raw Farm milk, believing it offered health benefits. Alexander, a 14-year-old tabby, and Tuxsie, a 4-year-old tuxedo cat, died on Thanksgiving Day and two days later, respectively. Big Boy, a 4-year-old male cat, was hospitalized for a week before tests confirmed the infection. Although he has recovered, he is blind and paralyzed in his back legs.
A fourth cat, Cleo, remained healthy as she did not consume the contaminated milk. Journell claims the milk killed his cats and is seeking compensation from Raw Farm owner Mark McAfee. McAfee disputes this, citing preliminary research that suggests the virus couldn't have survived long enough in the milk to cause illness. However, influenza expert Richard Webby argues that the virus' survival rate in milk likely varies. This case follows a massive outbreak of bird flu in dairy cows, affecting over 900 U.S. dairy herds in 16 states, with most cases concentrated in California. Health officials have warned against consuming raw milk and feeding raw meat to pets due to the risk of bird flu infection. Journell, who also fell ill after the cats, claims he wasn't tested for bird flu despite his known exposure, as medical staff lacked the necessary tests at the time. He has since recovered physically but continues to experience emotional distress from the loss of his pets. Despite his ordeal, he still believes in the potential health benefits of raw milk
