The treatment was authorised for emergency use despite it being banned in the UK

Extinction Rebellion protestors laid flat on the ground of Hucknall's high street dressed as bees to oppose a Government measure they say undermines the UK's food security. Dozens of campaigners were in Hucknall on Saturday for a march through the town and a piece of street theatre highlighting the harmful effects of a banned pesticide treatment.

Mr Spencer, whose constituency includes Hucknall, said at the time that the decision to authorise the pesticides was "not taken lightly." But amid claims that just a teaspoon full of the substance is enough to kill over a billion honeybees, the campaigners in Hucknall said there was no place for the treatment under any circumstances.

But the Wildlife Trust says pollinators such as bees have been estimated to contribute around £651 million to the UK economy every year, higher than the potential cost of the virus. The UK Expert Committee on Pesticides was asked for its advice on the potential authorisation by the Government, but said it could not support it given its view that the potential harm to bees and other pollinators outweighed the likely benefits.
