The Canary Islands government has issued a advice to avoid a 'dangerous situation' along coastlines

Holidaymakers in the Canary Islands have been urged to take “extreme caution” as the government issues a “pre-alert” warning for dangerous coastal conditions today, Thursday, October 17. A warning is in place from 11am for the north and west coasts of La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as the northern coast of Tenerife, La Gomera and Gran Canaria.

People are being urged not to approach docks and breakwaters to avoid being swept away by the waves, especially if the sea appears to have calmed down. The pre-alert has been issued due to a combination of rough sea conditions, high spring tides and a northeasterly wind, which may reach up to 49km per hour.

The government warns that “particular attention” will need to be paid to spring tides, which are between 1.30pm and 2.05pm on Thursday, and the high tides on Friday between 2am and 2.30am, and 2.15pm and 2.45pm.The coastal conditions are expected to be “short-lived” but the Canary Islands government warns that “strong swells and northeasterly swells of between 2 and 3 metres” could occur, with “combined sea waves of between 2.5 and 3.5 metres in height”.

It has advised residents and tourists to: not approach docks and breakwaters to avoid being swept away by the waves, and to not stay near the sea or approaching it even if it suddenly calms down. It added areas where you could be isolated by the rising tide should be avoided to ensure you’re not in a “dangerous situation”. In the event of an emergency, people are reminded to call 112 immediately.
