A new Warhammer RPG game, developed by Thought Pennies, has been cancelled three years into development after its publisher withdrew funding. Despite the team's success and the growing popularity of the Warhammer franchise, the game's future remains uncertain.
A promising new Warhammer RPG video game has been cancelled three years into development. The unannounced project, created by a team of 60 developers at the studio Thought Pennies, was scrapped after its publisher unexpectedly pulled funding. Despite the recent success of Space Marine 2 last year and Games Workshop 's desire to see more major releases in the Warhammer franchise, the secret RPG has been left unfinished.
Thought Pennies chief creative officer Daniel Erickson spoke to MP1ST about the cancellation, stating that the team had consistently met milestones, received positive feedback, and built strong partnerships. However, the publisher's shift in strategic direction left the development team without the necessary resources to continue. Erickson expressed the team's growth from a small startup to a large group of dedicated professionals, highlighting the sudden change in circumstances. Multiple developers who worked on the project have since revealed that the game was set in the Warhammer universe. It was envisioned as a co-op PvE action RPG featuring a diverse cast of heroes with unique playstyles. The game also planned to incorporate live-service elements, delivering additional content and updates after launch. Given the immense popularity of both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 in recent years, the cancellation of this ambitious project is a disappointment. The current state of live-service games, with examples like the failure of Concord and the player decline in Destiny 2, adds another layer of concern. Hopefully, Thought Pennies will find new funding opportunities in the future. The team's downsizing and project cancellation paint a bleak picture for their immediate future
