A house fire in Gedling, Nottinghamshire, led to the discovery of a cannabis grow. The fire, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 11th, caused no injuries. Police and fire investigators are currently conducting a full investigation.
Cannabis plants were found inside a property in a Nottinghamshire town following a house fire. The emergency services were called to a property in Shearing Hill, Gedling just after midnight on Saturday, January 11. Officers have said that no one was injured during the fire. Crews from Arnold, Carlton and London Road Fire Station attended the house fire, extinguishing it using two hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus.
A joint police and fire investigation was completed, and the incident has now been handed over to the police. A spokesperson said: 'Police supported the fire service at a house fire in Shearing Hill in Gedling just after midnight on Saturday January 11. 'No one was at the property at the time of the fire and the fire has now been extinguished. Police have since discovered a cannabis grow at the property and a scene is currently in place while a full investigation takes place.' Another house fire was caused by a cannabis grow in Stapleford on November 25. More than 80 plants were uncovered by crews and detectives dealing with the blaze on Manor Avenue. At the time, the police said they believed the fire was linked to 'dangerous alterations made to the electrical system', and officers warned neighbours to report their suspicions going forward. The plants were found spread across multiple rooms of the property, and they were removed with all of the associated growing equipment put beyond use. Sergeant Simon Boyles, of Nottinghamshire Police, issued a stark warning following the incident. He said: 'Cannabis grows of this nature pose a significant fire risk for various reasons – none more so than the illegal modifications that are routinely made in order to bypass electricity metres. 'The required lighting and heating equipment, meanwhile, generates a large amount of heat in an environment often piled high with fertilisers and other chemicals. That’s why it’s so important for neighbours to report their suspicions to us at an early stage, because fires like this could very quickly spread to adjoining properties.
